Footnotes

Nestling in damp rose petals

comes in a scented memory, unbidden,

of grandmother’s garden.

Late in September

as birds depart, trees shed leaves,

bleeding Summer again.

Yesterday you railed with

the angry noise of trapped wasps;

today you’re all silk.

Spring and the bullfinch

at the choisya buds; coal tit ousted

from his cherry tree perch
