The sea water surface splutters and splits
like shattered black glass
sharp as a flint, soft as grass
Waves gobble up the land’s detritus,
its junk and rejections, the flot and the jet,
dead crabs and abandoned fishermen’s net
Water looks weak, but secretes its strength
wearing down pebbles, smoothing the stones,
crushing, pressing porcelain and bones
Tumbling and turning, relentlessly churning,
sucking up cliffs, absorbing the sky
watchful and waiting with predators eye.
